IFA’s NextGen Program and Speaker Ryan’s Confident America Agenda on Same Page

By: Nick Johns

U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan is no stranger to speaking to young people. After all, as the father of two children and former vice presidential nominee, he has had plenty of opportunities. Maybe that’s why Speaker Ryan understands the importance of including Millennials in his policy strategy, and why he recently held a town hall discussion at Georgetown University on topics that matter to the newly minted generation. The Franchise Education & Research Foundation, formerly named the IFA Educational Foundation, also recognizes this generation’s importance so it started programs like the NextGen In Franchising initiative to engage young entrepreneurs and educate them on the franchising business model and how to effectively scale a business.

Speaker Ryan’s new plan, Confident America, intends to boost economic growth and social mobility for the United States through a range of policy fixes. Ryan and GOP leadership also want to embrace the fact that Millennials are bound to be a key voting bloc for the foreseeable future. A major obstacle for the GOP’s outreach efforts is communicating the positive aspects of a pro-growth agenda to a generation that overwhelmingly supports Democratic candidates, and have been particularly supportive of Senator Sanders in the Presidential race.

That’s why it’s great to see that Speaker Ryan recognizes the positive benefits of entrepreneurship and bottom-up growth, because IFA does as well. The NextGen in Franchising Global Competition promotes young entrepreneurship through innovative programs like FranShark, where young entrepreneurs compete to pitch their best new and upcoming businesses and business ideas before seasoned franchising executives. In the inaugural FranShark competition, the top winner won a $10,000 cash prize and two $5,000 cash prizes were awarded to second and third place contestants. Another $5,000 prize was awarded to recognize a social franchising concept during the competition. The Next Gen in Franchising Global Competition had over 250 entrants, and the top 20 were selected to present at the IFA’s Annual Convention in San Antonio, TX. Young entrepreneurs looking to compete in the 2017 competition should sign up HERE.

We’re excited to see what FranShark winners Carmelo Marsela, Katleen Jeanty, Jai Hobbs, and Victor Mhango, will do with this opportunity, and we’re excited to see how Speaker Ryan’s legislative agenda will encourage small business growth.
