IFA Kicks Off its Nationwide Campaign Connecting Local Franchise Small Business Owners with their Elected Officials

IFA held its first of many national barnstorming events in Auburn, New Hampshire, and Sterling, Virginia, on Dec. 16, 2014. The events were hosted by local franchise business owners eager to support both IFA and the Franchise Action Network’s (FAN) nationwide campaign to educate and raise awareness of elected officials on the joint employer issue, the benefits of franchising, and the impact local franchise small businesses have on their communities. At the events, the franchisees focused the discussions on current and upcoming challenges facing their businesses, particularly the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) move to treat franchisees as “joint employers” with their franchisors.

In New Hampshire, Visiting Angels franchisee Debra Desrosiers hosted a roundtable discussion with Representative-elect Frank Guinta (NH-1), fellow Visiting Angels franchisee Louise Murphy, and Steve Duprey a Concord-based Choice Hotel franchisee. The group discussed the negative impact that would come from the NLRB treating franchisees as joint employers with their franchisor. Rep.-elect Guinta was receptive to these concerns, and vowed to fight this regulatory overreach in Washington.

After the meeting and a tour of the facilities at Visiting Angels, Mr. Guinta and the franchisees met with members of various local media outlets, including NH 1, The Union Leader and The NH Journal.

In Northern Virginia, Jim Ilaria, Multiunit franchisee of Applebee’s, hosted a similar roundtable event attended by Representative-Elect Barbara Comstock (VA-10) and Loudon County Supervisor Suzanne Volpe. The discussion, focused on the franchisees’ concerns with the NLRB rulings, and was well received by Congresswoman-elect Comstock. She echoed many of the concerns voiced by the hosts, particularly surrounding the devastating impacts a NLRB redefinition of joint employer would have on franchise small businesses.

After the event, which included a tour of the Applebee’s location, the roundtable participants provided comments to the media, each touching on the benefits of local franchise small businesses in the community and at a national level in terms of job creation and economic growth.

IFA Senior Vice President of Public Affairs & Media Relations Matt Haller said of the day’s events: “Franchise business owners are increasingly recognizing the existential threat the NLRB’s change in joint employer liability would have to their businesses.” IFA will be scheduling additional events in 2015 and looks forward to raising awareness of the many benefits local franchise small businesses bring to their communities.
