North Carolina Franchises Join Together at the Capitol to Meet with Legislators and Discuss Benefits of Franchising

On April 14, IFA hosted its North Carolina Franchising Day at the Capitol in Raleigh. In attendance were over 15 members from brands including Great Clips, Sport Clips, Golden Corral, FASTSIGNS, Blue Moon Estate Sales, Nexsen Pruet, Alliance Franchise Brands, McDonalds and Yum Brands, in addition to IFA staff.

While North Carolina continues to be a pro-business, pro-franchise state, members of our group took time during meetings to reiterate the many benefits of franchising. In North Carolina franchising produces over 22 Billion in economic output through more than 26,000 locations that employ nearly 300,000 workers in the state. In addition to this, the group stressed to lawmakers the mutually beneficial relationship that exists between franchisor and franchisee, their job creation and the economic contributions they make to the state and their communities.

The delegation expressed their support of the franchise business model, wherein they have the ability to own and operate a successful business from a proven business model. Also conveyed to the lawmakers were advantages that the franchise model affords entrepreneurs, like the ability to focus acutely on their daily operations and quality customer care because the franchisor provides operating procedures and support services, such as national brand marketing and advertising.

The diverse delegation of franchisees, franchisors and supplier members from different business lines allowed the group to educate members from different perspectives of the franchise business model. Emphasized was the diversity within the structure of franchising; not only as it relates to business lines, but also demographically as well. A greater number of franchise businesses are owned by both women and minorities than non-franchised businesses.

Overall, the meetings were well received by the elected officials who appreciated members of the small business community coming to the Capitol and sharing individual stories of entrepreneurship and their support for pro-business policies. It was clear that the members to which the group met with understood the positive impact the franchise business model has on job creation and economic growth in their districts and across the state of North Carolina.
